JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs major and minor mechanical work; repairs, overhauls, body and fender fabrication and general maintenance of school buses, and other type vehicles and other automotive and power equipment for the District. Bus Mechanics work under the direction of the Lead Bus Mechanic and Director of Transportation. This Mechanic will work at a senior level. Mechanics exercise judgment and discretion as it relates to decisions of repair or replacement of components and on general vehicle safety. Supervision or assistance is available as new or unusual situations arise within the scope of this position.
Performance Responsibilities
- Good understanding of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive trade
- Minimum of 5 years experience or a satisfactory equivalent combination of schooling, apprenticeship training, and job experience
- Working knowledge of the principles of operation of internal combustion engines
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade
- Skill in the safe use of tools of the trade
- Skill in the diagnosing and proper repair of defects in motorized equipment
- Inspect and diagnose a variety of mechanical, electrical and body work needs, and direct appropriate repair and maintenance
- Weld, machine, and fabricate parts
- Install new equipment and parts, and repair existing equipment and parts as needed
- Perform small engine repairs to District equipment
- Operate and instruct operation of special shop equipment
- Maintain all records for an efficient shop operation including inventory, service records, pricing, and other related records
- Organize incoming work orders and identify parts needed to fix and repair buses
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Able to maintain a professional attitude when confronted with irate parents with regards to their students’ discipline issues.
- Be able to fill in as a sub driver on any and all routes on a moment’s notice.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Transport students and other authorized persons over regular routes, on field, extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the School District.
- Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by State and District policy. (Daily pre-trip inspections are required).
- Complete forms, records and reports as required by the State or local School District policies.
- Responsible for knowing and following procedures, policies and requirements of the Transportation Department for Kettle Falls School District.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT and Salary:
A typical school year consists of 180 days plus 10 holidays, September through June of each school year. The individual number of days may vary by position as defined within the CBA.
The salary range for the position is: Min $21.07 – Max $ 32.02. Salary placement will be at step 1 on the scale for the position unless otherwise noted within the contract. Each employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than a full work year shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employee’s scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours, or to be accumulated for the purpose of cash out.
Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
Qualifications/Educational Experience
- Possess a valid state driver’s license including a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Minimum age 21.
- Maintain a current State of Washington School Bus Driver’s Authorization.
- Have at least two years’ experience as a school bus driver.
- Operate school buses under all types of weather conditions including, but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice.
- Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks, and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description.
- Sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, District staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their related activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with students, other employees, management, and the public.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be fully certified school bus driver/valid Washington State Driving Certificate/CDL
Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must be fingerprinted. Employment is contingent upon clearance by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
